How to Empty an Ostomy Pouch
Emptying an ostomy pouch may sound difficult, but it’s a simple routine that you can learn with a little practice.
It’s important to monitor your pouch capacity and empty it when it’s 1/3 to 1/2 full. Most people with a urostomy empty the pouch every two to four hours. The timing varies for people with a colostomy or ileostomy.
This quick guide will show you how to empty your ostomy pouch.
How to Empty Stool From a Drainable Pouch
Step 1: Go to the bathroom and find a comfortable position on the toilet
You can sit far back on the toilet seat, sit backward on the toilet seat, or stand over the toilet, whichever is easiest for you. Make sure you have toilet paper within reach.
Step 2: Open the pouch
Pinch the nozzle to prevent leaks, then lift the pouch so the opening is facing up. Then, open the pouch by twisting the nozzle, removing the plug, or folding down the nozzle.
Step 3: Empty the pouch into the toilet
Point the pouch opening down into the toilet. Slide your hands down the pouch to push out the contents.
If you’re standing, you may want to flush the toilet while doing this, or drop a few pieces of toilet paper into the water. This will prevent splashing.
Step 4: Clean the opening of the pouch
Wipe it carefully, inside and out, with toilet paper.
Step 5: Add pouch lubricating drops
hile not required, deodorizing lubricant makes it easier to empty your ostomy pouch and also neutralizes odors.

Step 6: Close the pouch
Make sure the clamp, clip or seal is tightly closed.
Step 7: Check the pouch
Make sure your pouch remains securely attached and in place. Wash your hands, and you’re good to go.
How to Empty Urine from an Ostomy Pouch

Step 5: Check the pouch
Make sure your pouch remains securely attached and in place. Wash your hands, and you’re good to go.
