How to Use Ostomy Pouch Lubricating Drops

Pouch lubricating drops, also called lubricating deodorant, have a few important benefits. Lubricating drops help make sure that the contents of your ostomy pouch flow to the bottom of the pouch, preventing blockage or leakage issues. Pouch lubricant also makes it easier to empty your ostomy pouch and reduces odor when doing so.

Ostomy pouch lubricant can be used with one- or two-piece pouching systems and closed or drainable pouches. It’s available in individual sachets as well as bottles. This quick guide will show you how to effectively use ostomy pouch lubricant drops.

How to Use Lubricating Drops With a Drainable Pouch

Step 1: Apply pouching system

Apply your ostomy pouch as usual, but don’t close it yet.

Step 2: Add lubricating drops to the bottom of the pouch

Follow product directions to add the correct amount of pouch lubricant. Then, close the pouch.

Step 3: Rub the pouch in a circular motion

This helps to distribute the lubricating drops over the inside of the pouch. Try to avoid getting pouch lubricant on the filter. If any lubricant gets on your stoma or your skin, that’s OK. It won’t harm your stoma, and it easily washes off with water.

How to Use Lubricating Drops With a Closed Pouch

Before removing the release liner from your skin barrier, add the correct amount of pouch lubricant (follow product directions).
